What we do

We revamped Industrial.com.my from a business directory into a news and guides portal. The work covered the design, the build, the editorial architecture and the on page SEO. The architecture is the substance of it. Subjects sit in a two level tree so a topic can live under a parent without an article URL depending on where it is filed, and articles sit at the root of the domain so a piece never looks stale because of a date or a section buried in its own address. Every article carries a byline that leads to a real author page with a bio and that writer's back catalogue, plus a breadcrumb trail, an automatic table of contents on the longer pieces, and share buttons. Search works from the header and from the sidebar. The subject tree was laid out for where the publication is heading rather than only for what is published today, so a new topic finds a home that already exists instead of needing a new structure built for it.

Short description

Industrial.com.my publishes long form guides about Malaysian industry, written for manufacturers, factory owners, production managers and the people who buy industrial goods and services. Pieces run to a couple of thousand words with a table of contents, and cover manufacturing and production, artificial intelligence on the factory floor, construction and industrial property, water and waste treatment, trade and logistics, and business services such as trademark registration. Three named writers carry the bylines, each with a bio and an archive of their own. A separate page keeps a month by month calendar of Malaysian industrial trade shows for the year.

Full description

The decision that shapes a publication is where an article lives. Put the section and the date in the URL and every piece is stamped with the day it went up and the desk it came from, which is right for reporting and wrong for a guide somebody will still be reading in three years. Put the article at the root and it keeps one short address for its whole life, while the subject tree above it can be reorganised as the publication grows without breaking a single link. This site takes the second route, and the categories nest two deep so a parent page can gather everything filed beneath it and a reader can move from a broad subject to a narrow one in a click.

The other decision worth naming is bylines. A trade publication lives or dies on whether the reader believes a person wrote the piece, so every article names its writer, links to a page holding that writer's bio and everything else they have published, and closes with an author box rather than a house logo. Around the articles sit the things a returning reader actually uses: search in the header and the sidebar, editor picks and latest articles down the side, and a trade show calendar that is a genuine reason to come back at the start of a month.
